Given as she was to staring up at her hand in the dark, she was long familiar with the peculiar body state in which continuing kinesthetic sensation is paired with the complete lack of the visual. Again, unbidden, the thought came to her that, in the night, her body took on another kind of existence, still being but lacking or perhaps ebbing, an existence in which she passed from one side to the other and joined the ghasts, unseen but felt, with which the mind populates the dark hours of morning.
