PHE

September 2, 2014

My morning walk leads me more often than not before some recreational area. This morning was no exception as I passed by the pétanque pit. To my great surprise, at this early hour, a man, neither old nor young, was drawing a rake back and forth across the sand grains. In his smooth, practiced, even movements, I saw not simply the worker’s attention to detail but the wiseman’s discipline and reflection, all that which can only be codified in something akin to the rigid aesthetic of zen gardens. So too do pétanque pits enfold their own potential for enlightenment.
