In the bath, I carry on discussions between myself and imagined theologians on the nature of god’s existence, that is, whether this existence is itself bound up with at every instant ensuring that each element of the whole of creation functions as foreseen or, perhaps instead, whether that same existence is that of a distant emperor, utterly alien and aloof, and whose gilded halls we may roam as long as we like without ever coming face-to-face with the ruling god.
