On a supermarket’s outer wall had I come across the stunning message: “Non au migrand, la France et pas votre pay”. To my mind, its startling quality owed less to the general sentiment expressed than to the way in which the poor spelling served to twist its meaning about and collapse the statement in on itself: not “No to the migrant, France is not your country” but rather “No to the migrant, France and not your country”.
