Chateaubriand writes in the Mémoires that he brought back from his circuit of the Holy Land two metal bottles housing water from the Dead Sea and the River Jordan. Contemporary descriptions of his residence at Vallée aux loups make note of the bottles, but only in the past, and fail to specify what became of their contents, indeed whether the bottles house those waters still or found them a drain to join the more profane in France.
