When travelling, the question remained open, for him, whether it was better to enter a city knowing nothing of its history or to arrive only after having completed a thorough study thereof. Certainly, he was able to savour the former in a way unavailable to the latter, as every sense strained to its limit in order to take in and make something of the urban and architectural confusion swimming before him and then to set out an imagined city history for later comparison. That said, he could not deny that the latter afforded context, that which bound the confusion, a surer means of setting in order disparate layers and fusing them, much as the cathedral joined Roman, Gothic and Baroques naves one to another.
